L'Avventura!

Hello, ducks!

I'm jaunting off on a European adventure in, oh, twenty minutes, which means I'll be out of pocket for the next couple of weeks. I'll try to update from the road, but for the most part, I leave you in the lovely and capable hands of Maggie.

See you soon, lovelies!

cheers,
shiv

Everything but the Quack: 100 posts, two ducks.

Hey! It's our 100th post! We'd like to thank you all for joining us on the journey so far. We don't know about you, but we're having a blast!

We celebrated the milestone by having brunch at Spitzer's Corner and then taking a field trip to the Essex Street Market (also known as Shiv's New Favorite Place Ever). Our first stop while there was Jeffrey's Meats, an institution that's been filling the Lower East Side's butchery needs for more than 75 years. The shop (booth 36 at the market, if that helps) is run by the charming, eccentric Jeffrey himself, who flirted shamelessly and gifted us with goat's cheese as we chatted with him about the duck products we were after. Unsurprisingly, we walked away happy--I with a whole duckling (everything but the quack!), Maggie with a gorgeous leg--and charmed by the promise that when we next came by, we could even get the quack, if we'd just call ahead.

Admittedly, I'm trying to live quack-free these days, so I probably won't be taking advantage of that offer. I will, however, be cooking the bejiggety out of that duck tomorrow night (as will Maggie); watch this space to find out the outcome of our Adventures in Waterfowl!

Here's to a hundred more, a thousand more, a zillion more!

P.S. Has anyone else heard about PETA's new campaign to rebrand fish as "sea kittens"? Does anyone find it as bizarre as I do? Like, sufficiently bizarre that you're not sure whether or not it's a joke?

And the countdown begins...

I'm not sure if I've actually waxed rhapsodic about it here in this forum, but I love Thanksgiving. Hands down, my favorite holiday of the year--not least because I've spent the last few years co-hosting the Great Brooklyn Refugee Thanksgiving with one of my greatest friends, the indomitable Biscuit.

In honor of our ninth Refugee Thanksgiving, we thought it might be fun to give y'all a little peek inside the kitchen; show you some of the method behind the madness, as it were. So...we're liveblogging Thanksgiving, starting now.

Why are we starting now, I hear you ask? There's still a week to go! Well. You see, Thanksgiving in the house of Shiv and Biscuit is A Production. Such A Production that I can't even liveblog it alone, which is why I called in reinforcements. That's right! For the next week or so, there's a new buckeroo at the P&C ranch, here to charm, dazzle, and wow you with his wit in those moments where I find myself busy sponging merengue off the ceiling.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce to you your new favorite guest blogger: the one, the only, the fabulously coiffed and tremendously handsome: Biscuit!

Hey, Biscuit--want to say hi?

Computerless and purple

I'm out a computer this week (because This One is out a computer and therefore needs to work on the laptop I've been borrowing from him since mine started making scary black kernel-panic screens every time you type the letter "L"...)

As far as cooking goes, we made the purple potatoes from our CSA last night. I was expecting the color to fade once they were peeled and cooked...but no, they made totally lavender mashed potatoes (with goat cheese, bien sur!) He said the purpleness was a good thing in his book, but I thought they were kind of weird. Served them under juicy shoulder-blade lamb chops, which are definitely a rugged cut. They're less than half the price of loin chops, though, which is great if you're willing to deal with dissecting them. Not really dinner-party material, but delicious with a nice glass of red wine.

notes from the wine country

vines1

howdy, campers! did you miss me?

I'm back from way out west and would like to thank everyone who sent me such fantastic suggestions as to things to see and do and taste; I hate to admit that I didn't follow a single suggestion (mea culpa! mea culpa!). I meant to, I really did! I had all these ideas about how this trip was going to turn out, all these thoughts of the new and exciting things we'd do and try...

barrels

...instead, the trip became (as my trips back to California typically do) a whirlwind of family and friends; though we managed to get out and see a few things (and get nicely drunk in the alexander valley), for the most part the trip was spent introducing Bench to my mother, learning to grill, driving a mini cooper and catching up with my past. I did cook a little, and I will share what I've learned shortly. Re-entry into real life has been a little bumpy, and I need a couple minutes to put my thoughts together.

Having said that..Hi! It's great to see you! Stay tuned for more mischief in the kitchen!
